GROUP TST: Stamps generated in equipment and component tests[edit]

Click here to return to the United States Postage Meter Stamp Catalog

  • Most of the stamps in this group were listed as Specimens (Sub-group B) in earlier editions of this catalog. Most Specimens are generated for publicity and promotional purposes and are expected to have at least some public exposure. Test stamps have a different purpose. They are generated during internal tests of machines and equipment and to preview town marks and slogans before they are released to the customer. They are not intended to be seen by the public and are normally destroyed or trashed after use. Those that escaped destruction and are available to collectors were in most cases saved by employees for their personal collections or those of friends.
  • Test stamps are also generated when variable rate stamp vending machines and digital post office franking systems are switched on. These "initiation" stamps are meant to show if the system is working properly. Test stamps such as this occasionally are found in public trash bins near the machines.
  • There is much overlap between Test and Specimen stamps. Specimen stamp designs have often been used for internal testing purposes. Cataloged in Group TST are only those stamp designs that unambiguously were meant for internal testing purposes only.
