In TCM, this prescription is used to dispel wind-phlegm. It has been used for patients with zhong feng (wind stroke) and bi zheng (closed disorder), showing symptoms such as loss of voice, facial paralysis with deviation of the eyes and mouth, unconsciousness, locked jaws, and a superficial, slippery and excess pulse. This formula has also been used for treating poisoning when the offending agent is still in the stomach.
