Typically, we would appreciate a much less difficult way to calculate properties of a system rather than having to come up with a multiplicity function, take the ln of it, and go from there. Fortunately, there are much better ways to do this. One is by considering a thermal reservoir, which makes some nice simplifications in a system, and for more complicated multi-particle comprised systems we can consider a different type of reservoir to simplify our calculations.
