There are two types of nouns in Slovene:

  • Proper Nouns
  • Common Nouns

Proper Nouns refer to a particular person, place, or institution by name, e.g. 'Alpe', 'Piran', 'Maribor', 'Triglav', 'Skofja Loka'.

Common Nouns are either concrete or abstract. A concrete noun refers to a person, substance, or thing, i.e something we can touch or see, e.g. mama, 'hisa', 'cerkev', 'cesta', 'reka', 'mesto'. An abstract noun is used to describe quality, experience, or an idea, e.g. 'radost', 'mladost', 'kajenje'.

There are no equivalent English articles 'a/an' and 'the'. For example, using the word 'cerkev' means 'a church' or 'the church'. Word order and context determines which article is used.
