Serer medieval history is characterised by resisting Islamization from the 11th century during the Almoravid movement to the 19th century Muslim Marabout movement of the Senegambia. The old Serer paternal dynasties such as the Joof and Faye survived but the old Wagadou maternal dynasty was replaced by the Guelowars in the 14th century.

Along with resisting Islamization, the Serer-Cangin groups also also spent a long time resisting Wolofization.
