Photo diode is a p-n junction diode fabricated with a transparent window to allow light and is operated under reverse bias. When light with energy hν>Eg of the semiconductor fall on the diode electron-hole pair are generated. Electrons are collected on n side and holes on p side, increasing the reverse current through the diode.
