Stamp collecting came first and eventually evolved into the study of the technical and historical side of things, collectively called: philately.

The word "phila" comes from the Greek, meaning "love"; while "ateli" means "postage dues". {citation needed} Philately, therefore, is basically the study of postage items: stamps, first-day-covers, miniature sheets, etc including the manner on how they are created, what materials are used. {citation needed}
