In their first meeting, Hagrid mentions to Harry that Voldemort killed some of the best wizards of the age such as the McKinnons, along with the Bones and the Prewetts.

As part of his attempt to plea-bargain his way out of Azkaban, Igor Karkaroff accuses Travers of killing the McKinnons.

At the celebratory party at Grimmauld Place for Ron and Hermione's appointment as Prefects, Alastor Moody shows Harry a photograph of the original Order of the Phoenix. Marlene McKinnon is in that photo, and Moody says that she and her family had been killed by Death Eaters.

Marlene is mentioned in a letter written to Sirius by Lily. In the letter Lily mentions that she cried all night after hearing of Marlene's murder.

Relationships with Other Characters

She seems to have been good friends with Lily as the latter said that she cried all night after Marlene was killed by Death Eaters. It's possible that they knew each other from their Hogwarts years.

Perhaps because it was apparently a letter from Sirius that mentioned Marlene's death, fans seem to believe she was in a relationship with Sirius, and have created fiction of their own centered about this relationship. The practice of creating or assuming relationships, particularly those unsupported or flat-out denied by the actual story arc, is known as "shipping".
