Philosopher's Stone[edit]

In their first meeting, Hagrid mentions to Harry that Voldemort killed some of the best wizards of the age such as the McKinnons, along with the Bones and the Prewetts.

Goblet of Fire[edit]

As part of his attempt to plea-bargain his way out of Azkaban, Igor Karkaroff accuses Travers of killing the McKinnons.

Order of the Phoenix[edit]

At the celebratory party at Grimmauld Place for Ron and Hermione's appointment as Prefects, Alastor Moody shows Harry a photograph of the original Order of the Phoenix. Marlene McKinnon is in that photo, and Moody says that she and her family had been killed by Death Eaters.

Deathly Hallows[edit]

Marlene is mentioned in a letter written to Sirius by Lily. In the letter Lily mentions that she cried all night after hearing of Marlene's murder.

Relationships with Other Characters[edit]

It is likely that she was close friends with Lily as the as the latter said that she cried all night after Marlene was killed by Death Eaters. It's possible that they knew each other from their Hogwarts years.

Being a member of the original Order of the Phoenix, it is plausible that she also would have been friends with the Marauders and the Longbottoms, along with the other members of the Order.

It is also believed by some that Marlene was in a relationship with Sirius because it was a letter to Sirius that mentioned Marlene's death. Marlene also means “star of the sea” and Sirius is a “star of the sky” and it has been known in the past that JK Rowling puts a lot of forethought into the names of the characters and how they relate to the plot, take for example "Remus Lupin". "Remus", of course, is a reference to the mythological character of the same name, who was raised by wolves. "Lupin" is a form of the latin "lupus", translating to the word "wolf" hinting the fact that Remus was a werewolf. Also, Marlene was in the original Order of the Phoenix, so she definitely would have known Sirius from there even if she hadn't attended Hogwarts with Lily. Fans have speculated that the two might have been in a relationship up until Marlene's death, and giving them the "ship" name "Blackinnon".
