Beginner warning: Details follow which you may not wish to read at your current level.

Harry first encounters this spell when learning Occlumency from Professor Snape. Legilimency is the process of reading thoughts and feelings from a subject. A wizard or witch may use Legilimency to tell if someone is lying to them. Lord Voldemort is especially skilled at detecting lies using Legilimency. This may be countered by a wizard or witch if he or she is a skilled Occlumens, that is, skilled in Occlumency. Professor Snape appears to be proficient at legilimency and is definitely an accomplished Occlumens, even able to lie to Lord Voldemort.
