About Edubuntu[edit | edit source]
Labdoo project supply laptops with Edubuntu already installed.
Edubuntu, also previously known as Ubuntu Education Edition, is an official derivative of the Ubuntu operating system designed for use in classrooms inside schools, homes and communities.
Edubuntu has been developed in collaboration with teachers and technologists in multiple countries. Edubuntu is built on top of the Ubuntu base, incorporates the LTSP thin client architecture and several education-specific applications, and is aimed at users aged 6 to 18. It is designed for easy installation and ongoing system maintenance.
Included with Edubuntu there is a large number of educational applications including GCompris, KDE Edutainment Suite, Sabayon Profile Manager, Pessulus Lockdown Editor, Edubuntu Menueditor, LibreOffice, Gnome Nanny and iTalc as well as many more. Some of them as enjoyable as Tux Math or Celestia.
In this guide you'll know about especific educational software and other software like Firefox or Rhythmbox. Those other software could seem not educational software but could it be very useful for students and so many people.

Blinken
Blinken is based on an electronic game released in 1978, which challenges players to remember sequences of increasing length. On the face of the device, there are 4 different color buttons, each one with their own distinctive sound. These buttons light up randomly, creating the sequence that the player must then recall. If the player is successful in remembering the sequence of lights in the correct order, they advance to the next stage, where an identical sequence with one extra step is presented. If they are incorrect, the game is lost, and the player must start again from the beginning. The goal is to get a high score - each step in the sequence is worth one point, so correct entry of a sequence of 8 lights is worth 8 points on the high score table.
Celestia
Celestia is a 3D astronomy program created by Chris Laurel. The program is based on the Hipparcos Catalogue (HIP) and allows users to travel through an extensive universe, modeled after reality, at any speed, in any direction, and at any time in history. Celestia displays and interacts with objects ranging in scale from small spacecraft to entire galaxies in three dimensions using OpenGL, from perspectives which would not be possible from a classic planetarium or other ground-based display.

Kanagram
Kanagram is an educational game that creates anagrams, re-assortment of letters in a word, and the user needs to guess what the original word is. It is licensed under the GNU Public License v2, and it is part of the kdeedu package, and the user interface is designed to be approachable even by very young children. There is no time limit or limitations at attempts, and a hint system is built in.

KHangMan
KHangMan is the classical hangman game. The child should guess a word letter by letter. At each miss, the picture of a hangman appears. After 10 tries, if the word is not guessed, the game is over and the answer is displayed.

KmPlot
KmPlot is a mathematical function plotter for the KDE-Desktop.
It has built in a powerfull parser. You can plot different functions simultaneously and combine their function terms to build new functions. KmPlot supports functions with parameters and functions in polar coordinates. Several grid modes are possible. Plots may be printed with high precision in correct scale.
KTouch
A program that helps you to learn and practise touch typing.
KTurtle
KTurtle is an educational programming environment that aims to make learning how to program as easy as possible. To achieve this KTurtle makes all programming tools available from the user interface. The programming language used is TurtleScript which allows its commands to be translated.
KWordQuiz
KWordQuiz is a general purpose flash card program. It can be used for vocabulary learning and many other subjects.
KWordQuiz is the KDE (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE) version of the Windows program WordQuiz. If you have just switched to Edubuntu/Linux you can use all files created in WordQuiz with KWordQuiz. Additional information about KWordQuiz is available at the author's own website.

Marble
Versatile, yet easy to use. Use Marble similar to a desktop globe; pan around and measure distances. At closer scale it becomes a world atlas, while OpenStreetMap takes you to street level. Search for places of interest, view Wikipedia articles, create routes by drag and drop and so much more.

Parley
Parley is a program to help you memorize things. Parley supports many language specific features but can be used for other learning tasks just as well. It uses the spaced repetition learning method, also known as flash cards.
Creating new vocabulary collections with Parley is easy, but of course it is even better if you can use some of our premade files.
Step
Step is an interactive physics simulator. It works like this: you place some bodies on the scene, add some forces such as gravity or springs, then click "Simulate" and Step shows you how your scene will evolve according to the laws of physics.
You can change every property of bodies/forces in your experiment (even during simulation) and see how this will change the outcome of the experiment. With Step you can not only learn but feel how physics works !
