[edit | edit source]- A former French colony, Madagascar gained full independence in 1960 after going through an interim period as a self-governing republic within the French Community. The first meter was used in 1952.
- The stamps are grouped according to the political situation at time of issue:
- A - Overseas territory of France, to 1958 (stamps inscribed “MADAGASCAR ET DEPENDANCES” or “MADAGASCAR R.F.”)
- B - Republic within French Community, 1958 - 1960 (stamps inscribed “REPUBLIQUE MALGACHE”)
- C - Full independence (First Republic), 1960 - 1975 (stamps inscribed “REPOBLIKA MALAGASY”)
- D - Second and Third Republics, 1975 to present (stamps inscribed “REPOBLIKA DEMOKRATIKA MALAGASY” or “REPOBLIKAN’I MADAGASIKARA”)
