The country was a region of the former Soviet Union and became an independent country in 1991.
All stamps are inscribed “КАЗАХСТАН” or are without country inscription and have Kazakhstani town mark.
The stamps are grouped according to period:
A - Provisional issues without country inscription in the frank or with old Soviet Union identification ("CCCP") but modified in a way that indicates the change in status
B - Inscribed “КАЗАХСТАН”
NOTE: Many former Soviet Union stamps were used without alteration after independence.
