Belarus became an independent country after the former Soviet Union broke up in 1991. Meter stamps with Soviet markings continued to be used in Belarus after independence. See SOVIET UNION for these stamps. Covered here are only stamp designs introduced since independence and inscribed “BELARUS” or “БЕПАРУСЬ” or without country inscription but with Belarus town mark.
The stamps are grouped according to appearance and usage:
A - Provisional issues without country inscription in the frank, or with old Soviet Union identification ("CCCP") but modified in some way to indicate the change in status
B - Frank is octagon inscribed “BELARUS” or “БЕЛАРУСЬ”
C - Frank is rectangle
PO - Special stamps generated only in Post Offices
