Algeria[edit]
The country gained its independence from France in 1962. The first meters came into use in 1930 during the French occupation.
The stamps are grouped according to political status, inscription, and usage:
- A - French occupation, “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE” with “ALGERIE” or “ALGER”
- B - French occupation, “ALGERIE POSTES” or “POSTES ALGERIE”
- C - French occupation, “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE” or “POSTES FRANCAISE” without indication of Algerian use in the frank
- D - Republic, “REPUBLIQUE ALGERIENNE” in Arabic and French
- E - Republic, “ALGERIE” in Arabic and French
- PO - Stamp designs used only by Post Office meters
