Vanilor was a male dragon who lived during the time of the Dragon Riders as the King of the wild dragons. Eridor was his successor.
This name struck User:Artix Kreiger/Inheritance Cycle/Characters/Eragon\ as heroic, noble, and pleasing to the ear. This was the first name that Eragon suggested when trying to find out what name Saphira preferred for herself.
