In 1917, the Russian Empire was losing a war against both Germany and Austria-Hungary. The population was starting to resent the Czar/Tsar, and wanted a different leader so the war would end. Vladimir Lenin, returning from exile in Switzerland, led the Communist Party of Russia to power in the Template:October Revolution.
