Chapter 5

An article in The Weems Weekly dated October 15, 1929 carries the headline, "Ownership of Meteorite Questioned." Mrs. Otis claims ownership of the object because it broke her radio, but Mrs. Vesta Adcock and her son claim they own it because they own the house it hit. Dot Weems tells her readers times are getting tough. Her evidence for this statement is that five new hobos have been seen at the cafe.

Analysis[edit | edit source]

The date of this article is just before the stock market crash of 1929 that signaled the beginning of the Great Depression. Even before the crash, the economy was sinking. More people out of work led to more hobos looking for work and food.
