Imagine you are a football fan in a bar or kebab shop in France and football is on the television. Even if you have done French before, you are unlikely to have the vocabulary to talk to the locals about your shared interest. Or if they do speak some English, their vocabulary may be quite limited and it would be asking a lot to expect them to struggle with it during their time off. That's a shame because, for a lot of the French, the most interesting thing about other countries is their football.

No previous knowledge of French is required, but if you have done French before there will be lots of new vocabulary and colourful expressions to keep you interested.

By focussing on your interest you will find that language learning can be fun and effective at the same time. In the end, making contact with other people isn't about having textbook grammar and a perfect accent. It's about sharing an interest and having something to say.
