Today in 1969 under pressure from an antitrust lawsuit filed in January, IBM unbundled hardware and software and started to charge separately for software to allow for a software and services industry after previously using a bundling strategy for vendor-lockin. This is cited as birth of proprietary software which soon became the dominant development and distribution model. In the beginning, for many people software freedom has been the natural mode of software production. Afterwards it became something that had to be won back and fought for.
