(The Boy Monk and the Dying Fish)[edit | edit source]

Once upon a time, the Lord Buddha looked into the fate of a novice Buddhist monk. He saw that the boy monk would soon pass away. The boy monk was summoned and was told by Lord Buddha to return home to visit his parents. The boy monk followed his advice; he did not know that he was destined to die in a matter of days. He was quite happy to be able to return home to visit his parents.

It was a long way home. While he was on his way home, the young monk saw a fish in a drying puddle. The fish was struggling to survive under the summer heat.

With his compassion, the boy monk scooped the fish up; he would like to take it to a place where there was plenty of water such as a lake, pond, or a river.

When he found a big pond with plenty of water, the boy monk let the fish go. He then continued his journey.

Finally, the boy monk reached his home. His father and mother were very pleased to see him They did not know anything about the prediction concerning the fate of their son.

After a few days staying with the parents, the novice bid them farewell. he had to return to practice Dhamma with the Lord Buddha.

Seeing that the boy was still alive, Lord Buddha knew that on the way home the novice had accomplished something meritful—saving lives of others. Such act is a great merit, so great that it could alter the fate of a person.
