Possible questions in an exchange[edit | edit source]

How many are in your family?
¿Cuántos hay en tu familia?
Which one is yours?
¿Cuál es tuya? ¿Cuál es tuyo?
My child is ________.
Mi hijo/hija es _______.
How old is she/he?
¿Cuántos años tiene?
What is your name?
¿Cómo te llamas?
What is his/her name?
¿Cómo se llama él/ella?
What grade is she/he in?
¿En que grado esta él/ella?

Please keep in mind that in these basic lessons, we are not including USTED. For basics, we feel as though you are speaking to your peers. USTED is a term saved for people whom you are speaking with the utmost respect. Though it is nice to know, for beginning Spanish learners, it may be too confusing to learn. For example: ¿Como se llama? may be referring to USTED or EL/ELLA depending on the context.

Example dialogue 1:

In the following dialogue, Michelle and Daniel are meeting for the first time. Michelle has two children and Daniel has one. They are exchanging details about their kids.

Michelle: Hola. Me llamo Michelle. ¿Como te llamas?

Daniel: Hola Michelle. Yo me llamo Daniel.

Michelle: Mucho gusto. ¿Cuál es tu hijo o hija?

Daniel: Mi hija es María. Ella tiene seis años. Esta en el primer grado.

Michelle: O. Que bien. Yo tengo dos hijos. Se llaman Jaime y Jazmín.

Daniel: Que bonitos nombres. ¿Cuántos años tienen?

Michelle: Jaime tiene cuatro años y Jazmín tiene ocho años.

Notice how “tiene” was used for singular and “tienen” was used for plural.

Example dialogue 2: In the following dialogue, Matthew and Eliza catch up. They haven’t seen each other in a while and inquire about each others’ families.

Matthew: ¡Hola Eliza!

Eliza: ¡Hola Matthew!

Voy a tener otrobebée.

Matthew: ¡Felicidades!

Eliza: Si. Éramos cinco y ahora somos seis. Me encanta el numero seis.
