- 1: Two white stripes clearly present on each side of head, one going from bill to back of head and the other going from bill to neck or chest.
- 2: Two white stripes scarcely or not present on head.

- Hemiprocne comata: red patch present near eyes.
- Hemiprocne mystacea: red patch not present near eyes.

- Hemiprocne coronata: Patch of reddish color present near eyes.
- Hemiprocne longipennis: Patch of reddish color absent near eyes.
