Vetkoek is a South African fried yeasted dough. The word vetkoek literally translates to "fat cake", and it is soft and bread-like with a crisp exterior. Vetkoek may be served with delicious minced beef or turned into a dessert by serving along with cheese, syrup, honey, or jam.

Ingredients[edit | edit source]

Procedure[edit | edit source]

  1. Combine yeast, sugar, and warm water. Allow to stand for 5 minutes until the yeast softens and begins to bubble.
  2. Sift the flour into a large bowl, and mix in the salt.
  3. Mix the yeasted liquid to the flour, and stir until smooth. Stir or knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and stretchy.
  4. Transfer the dough to a clean bowl, and cover with a clean cloth. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until doubled.
  5. Pinch off pieces of dough the size of tennis balls. Roll into balls and flatten them slightly.
  6. Heat enough oil for deep-frying to 350°F (175°C). Fry 2–3 pieces of dough at a time in the hot oil about 3 minutes per side until golden brown all over.
