The microgram is a unit of weight. It is abbreviated µg, (or sometimes mcg but this is not approved by the Société Internationale (SI)). It is equal to one thousandth (0.001) of a milligram, and one millionth (0.000001) of a gram. It is included here for information purposes only as it has no use in cooking outside of scientific analysis of micronutrients in foodstuffs.

  • mg is the symbol for milligram. It may NEVER be used as an abbreviation for microgram. If misused in this manner in a pharmaceutical or medical setting, it could cause serious injury or death.
