Laver is generic English term referring to a variety of edible seaweeds. It can include seaweeds from the genera Porphyra, Pyropia, Monostroma, and Ulva. Because it is a generic term, care should be taken to obtain the correct variety of seaweed traditionally used or called for in a given recipe.
