A gill (pronounced: dʒil) is a unit of liquid measure equal to one fourth of a standard British pint which is 5 fluid ounces or about ⅔ of an American cup. The Oxford English Dictionary adds that in many districts a gill is a half-pint, a quarter-pint being called a jack.
