The genger tree (Bombax costatum) is a tree native to western/central Africa.

Characteristics

[edit | edit source]

The calyx at the base of the flower is edible. When the flowers fall from the tree, the calyxes are gathered and sun-dried until dark in color.[1]

Selection and storage

[edit | edit source]

As a dried product, the calyx should be stored in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture for maximum shelf life.

The dried calyx is typically pounded to a powder, which is then incorporated into soups, stews, and sauces.[1][2]
