Funkaso, also called pinkaso, is a fried food popular among the Hausa people. It can be eaten alone or as an accompaniment to a meal.
Ingredients[edit | edit source]
- Whole wheat flour
- Plain flour
- Instant dried yeast
- Salt
- Warm water
- Vegetable oil for deep frying
Procedure[edit | edit source]
- Combine the flours, yeast, and salt in a bowl.
- Gradually mix in the warm water until a dough is formed.
- Cover the mixture tightly. Let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until doubled in volume.
- Gently deflate the dough.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pot or deep-fryer. Try to aim for about 350–375°F. It should be hot enough for small test piece of dough to float and bubble, but it should not smoke or burn.
- Use your hands to pull off pieces of dough. Flatten the dough with your palm, and make a hole in the center.
- Fry the shaped dough in the hot oil until golden brown all over.
- Remove the finished funkaso with a perforated spoon, and drain away any excess oil.
- Serve the funkaso as-is or as an accompaniment.
