DEFINITE

  • MASCULINE
    • SING = el
    • PLUR = els
  • FEMININE
    • SING = la
    • PLUR = les


  • JOINED (l-apostrophe) articles for masculine or feminine words starting with a, e, o or h:
    • examples: l'article, l'entitat, l'oncle, l'hivern
  • JOINED articles before foreign words beginning with s followed by a consonant
    • example: l'Stradivarius [pronounced: estradivarius]
  • JOINED articles for words starting with u or i:
    • If the first syllable is stressed use l'.
      • l'Imma, l'ús (first letter is "i"/"u", first syllable stressed.)
    • If a syllable other than the first syllable is stressed use l-apostrophe before the u or i.
      • la Immaculada (first letter is "i", fourth syllable is stressed), la universitat (first letter is "u", the last syllable is stressed)
