  • Marlin the 3D printer firmware is a good choice. It has a strong community and most questions have been asked regarding it.

Bill of Materials and Estimated Costs

Most of these parts can be cheaply found on ebay if you search around a little bit. Be aware that if you order parts from Hong Kong or China there will likely be a wait time of 1 or 2 months for the part to arrive. US sellers will cost slightly more but are useful if you are part way through the build and need that part right way. Otherwise a good approach is to just buy the parts ahead of time a little at a time so that about the time you need them they arrive. Keep an eye out for any coupons or sales ebay has. High cost items like the spindle or stepper motors could be bought for a nice discount.

Electronics[edit | edit source]

Name Amount Estimated Cost Comments
Arduino Mega 1 $10.95 - $46 Non-genuine Arduino is cheaper but I am still unsure of the quality versus a real one
Ramps 1.4 1 $7.57 Ebay and Amazon give many options. These can be pre-built or even kits that you can assemble yourself.
DRV8825 (Optional but preferred over the A4988) 3 $4.74
Nema 17 Stepper motors (Get the Highest torque possible) 3 $57 Users have reported success with the 17HS19-2004S1 model from ebay number 231427537485 by the user account stepperonline
60mm DC Fan 1
Endstop micro switches (KW11 I drilled the whole to 3mm to screw then in to the plastic parts) 6 $1.26 These are cheaply found on ebay
DC Spindle (52mm Diameter - Get the highest wattage, you will be thank full later on) 1
Diode This is needed if using the heatbed Mosfet on the ramps to control the spindle - google Mosfet switching inductive loads for more information 1
4 core AWG26 cable (use for motor wiring and endstops) $9.84

Total estimated cost: $91.09

Fixings[edit | edit source]

It seems to make sense for some of the items to just buy a 100 pack of them. This way you know you will have enough and also it can help build up your supplies for these parts. Ebay or Amazon are good sources for most of these parts. Local hardware stores may also have these items, however, those prices tend to be higher than can be found online. Some of the prices below are the price to buy a few extra parts for example I bought 30 M8 Tee Nuts for $3.99 but I only needed 16 of them.

Name Amount Estimated Cost Comments
M8 nuts 100 $5
M8x25 bolts 24 $9.99 These bolts are used to:

Attach the bearings to the Y Motion Bearing Mount

M3 nuts 100 $3.99
M4 nuts 100 $4.99
M3 washers 100 $2.24
M4 Washers 100 $2.60
M8 washers 100 $5.29
M8 Tee Nuts 16 $3.99
M3 9mm Penny Washers 100 $5.94
M8 80mm bolt 10 $15.68 These are used to clamp the Y Motion Bearing Mounts together. Threaded rod can also be used.
M3x30 bolt 100 $9.94 These seem to about the right length for attaching the Y axis mounts to the base. Different size may be needed based on the thickness of the baseboard.

Bearings[edit | edit source]

Name Amount Estimated Cost Comments
608 Bearings 36

Metal Work[edit | edit source]

Name Amount Estimated Cost Comments
Aluminum Box section (X-Axis and Y-Axis) 25x25x496x3mm (W,D,L,T) 4 $14 Online this was costing a lot, but a local shops did seem to have it for a lot cheaper.
M8 Smooth Rod 580mm 1
M8 Threaded Rod 85 mm 8
M8 Threaded Rod 500 mm 1
M8 Threaded Rod 200 mm 2
M8 Threaded Rod 230 mm 1
M8 Threaded Rod 100 mm 2
M10 Smooth Rod 185 mm 2

Motion[edit | edit source]

Name Amount Estimated Cost Comments
GT2 Belt (Length depending on size of the machine) 1
GT2 36T Pulley 8mm Bore 2
3M-210T-06 Belt 1 $4.25 a piece Used to drive the Y-axis. If using two motors on the Y-axis then you will need two of them. Searching for 210-3M-06 on ebay turns up results.
3M-264T-06 HTD 1
GT2 16T Pulley 5mm Bore 1
Drag Chain 20 x 10 mm 1m Length 2

Wood[edit | edit source]

  • 2x Wood Side Panel
  • 1x Wood Base

Printing

How Much Plastic[edit | edit source]

2x 1kg spools seem to be about the right amount of plastic. That that said if you are not already a 3D printer expert expect to see some failed prints that will need reprinted.

Print Time[edit | edit source]

ABS or PLA[edit | edit source]

ABS will have a strength advantage and provides the option to spray on acetone to perhaps help bond the layers together better.

Settings[edit | edit source]

Resolution[edit | edit source]

0.25-0.35

Infill[edit | edit source]

50%

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Print with 3-4 perimeters
  • Print with ABS but PLA will be fine though your mileage may vary
