Annotations[edit | edit source]

024.12 Asculum       The site of a battle fought in the Pyrrhic war in 279 B.C., for which Joyce has his facts substantially correct.[1]

024.18 Pyrrhus       The Macedonian general in the Pyrrhic wars. His "end" was caused by an old Aregead woman who dropped a roofing tile on him from above, allowing an Argive soldier to behead him.[2] This fate is referred to in 025.21 as "fallen by a beldam's (old woman's) hand."
