Annotations to James Joyce's Ulysses/Nestor/024
024.12 Asculum The site of a battle fought in the Pyrrhic war in 279 B.C., for which Joyce has his facts substantially correct.
024.18 Pyrrhus The Macedonian general in the Pyrrhic wars. His "end" was caused by an old Aregead woman who dropped a roofing tile on him from above, allowing an Argive soldier to behead him. This fate is referred to in 025.21 as "fallen by a beldam's (old woman's) hand."
