chookchooks: Chook is an Australian/New Zealand call made to chickens.

drouth: A variation of the word drought, a period of drier than normal conditions.

quoits: iron or brass rings, perhaps washers to secure part of Bloom's bed.

short knock: The sound of a gavel at the end of a hastily concluded bidding process heard at an auction.

Tweedy: Bloom's father-in-law, Brian Tweedy.

Plevna: A city in North Bulgaria, the site of a major battle of the Russo-Turkish War fought in 1877.

corner: Buying up controlling shares of a limited supply, in this case valuable stamps.
