Australia was populated since the country separated from the super-continent seventy thousand years ago and had a rich history of musical cultural transmission and song lines. Explorers carrying more advanced instruments began visiting in the early seventeenth century. A vast change occurred with settlement in 1788. By default, the documented music history of Australia extends from the romantic era.

The earliest demonstration of novel instrument - the accordion - are found in Australian newspapers in 1833. Classes were advertised from the following year.
