Summary

Description
English: Patching Trainz with software updates like Hotfixes, Service Packs and patches can take from 30 seconds to over 10 hours depending upon the computer speed, Disk I/O speed, the type of software change and whether it also has to modify assets.
  • This is FIRST in a series of three such images documenting the process behavior and showing users what to expect in the series of b:Trainz/Introductory Trainz Wikibook tutorials.
  • Start was no earlier than 23:14 EDST local (Boston, USA).
  • What is NOT depicted were the three previous unsuccessful attempts which consumed over six hours. These consumed nearly two hours each, and the process seemed almost ready to complete successfully, before aborting with an error message at the last moment and with the progress bar nearly filled to the end!
  • After the frustrations of those cases, it was found having extra content in the Trainz release was intolerable to the patching process. This symptom was characteristic of the SP1 upgrade to Trainz Simulator 2006's service pack, which suggested what might have been going wrong.
  • In both, the assets in ..\local had to be moved out to a holding folder, then the bare program (plus built-in data) updated before re-importing said data to the newly upgraded software suite.
