DescriptionCoccinella septempunctata emerging from pupa1.jpg
English: Seven-spot ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata) emerging from its pupa. Note that even the elytra need to be pumped up; At first wrinkled and "open" towards the hind body. Around 10 minutes after emergence began they're closed, five minutes later they're fully stretched (smooth now) and the beetle has wandered off to find a spot for pumping up the wings. During the pumping of the wings also the colouration of the elytra slowly begins to develop. About half a day later the beetle clearly has its characteristic colours - although still visibly fresh. Location: Hengelo, Overijssel, Netherlands Keywords: ladybug, lady beetle, 7-spot See also: P4b species page (or category).
