Practice with these terms in this interactive exercise: Question practice activity

Please keep in mind that in these basic lessons, we are not including the formal form of address "USTED". This is the form of address you would use when speaking to someone in a superior social position. This form is much less commonly used by adults in a community of equals, like our community, so we will not be covering it in the introductory lessons. For now it is enough to know that you are learning the informal, every day, Spanish and that there is a more formal variety you could use.

In the following dialogue, Michelle and Daniel are meeting for the first time. Michelle has two children and Daniel has one. They are exchanging details about their kids.

Michelle: Hola. Me llamo Michelle. ¿Cómo te llamas?

Daniel: Hola Michelle. Yo me llamo Daniel.

Michelle: Mucho gusto. ¿Cuál es tu hijo o hija?

Daniel: Mi hija es María. Ella tiene seis años. Está en el primer grado.

Michelle: O. Que bien. Yo tengo dos hijos. Se llaman Jaime y Jazmín.

Daniel: Que bonitos nombres. ¿Cuántos años tienen?

Notice how “tiene” was used for singular and “tienen” was used for plural.

Dialogue 2 audio activity

In the following dialogue, Matthew and Eliza catch up. They haven’t seen each other in a while and inquire about each others’ families.

Matthew: ¡Hola Eliza!

Eliza: ¡Hola Matthew!

Voy a tener otro bebé.

Matthew: ¡Felicidades!

Eliza: Si. Éramos cinco y ahora somos seis. Me encanta el numero seis.
