Vegetarianism is a word which has at least slightly varying connotations within different cultural contexts. Here it simply indicates the practice of not consuming any animal flesh. Vegetarianism has a major offshoot or expansion, veganism, which is the practice of not consuming any animal products (in terms of food, this means no meat, eggs, milk, or honey).

There are many reasons for adopting vegetarianism: religious, ecological, etc. While this chapter will certainly be going into those concepts, it will focus itself on adoption of vegetarianism/veganism and how it is used in support of animal rights.
