Check Digit[edit]

(position 9): 0-9 or X

The check digit is used to validate a VIN so that computer systems can immediately calculate whether the VIN is valid. The digit is calculated by removing all the letters from the VIN and substituting them with the numbereric counterpart. After the substitution, the numbers are multiplied against a weight factor table. The remaining 16 numbers are added together and divided by 11. The remainder of that calculation becomes the checksum, and if the remainder is 11 then the check digit is "X".
