Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882), British naturalist, founder of the Theory of Evolution by means of natural selection.

Note: Darwin's books should be read with a historical mindset, as they do not always reflect current scientific opinion (though impressively, they often do). Scientifically speaking, the knowledge held in his books should be supplemented with other books in Biology.
