Description

Loreto, Mexico 2014

Legend and history confirms that Father Juan Maria de Salvatierra with very few resources and in the company of a few men did so in 150 years no one before him had done, the colonization and Christianization of the "other Mexico". That "other Mexico" with the passage of time would become the Baja California . At the founding of the Mission of Loreto on the shores of the Sea of Cortez followed by other missions in Baja California , many did not prosper, others became cities. The Society of Jesus , influential and powerful had its detractors and enemies, following accusations and betrayals was expelled from the Spanish dominions in 1767, Jesuit missionaries worked peacefully for seven decades in the Baja California peninsula , until February 1768 I came to order expulsion of all Spanish domains decreed by Charles III . At the end of the missionaries Jesuit mission friars remained in the hands of Franciscans , from there departed Brother Junipero Serra to evangelize the Alta California , today state of California . In 1773 the Mission of Our Lady of Loreto was taken over by the Dominican order, who arrived in the town of Loreto in the month of October of the same year. The Franciscan friars who had been at the mission for five years, left for the Alta California to continue in their work of evangelization.
