It is written in multiple writing systems, Meetei Mayek script, Bengali script, Naoriya Phulo script, among a few. Writers of Classical Meithei literature, especially poets, describe Meitei language & literature as a mother goddess, usually as unfortunate or underrated or lesser known in the garden of universal languages and literatures. Notably, Meitei literature (alias Manipuri literature) is officially recognised & honoured by Sahitya Akademi, the National Academy of Letters of India, through countless annual national literary awards.
