English: Culicoides female, lateral. Genus characteristics: 1- Antennae of females have 14 or 15 segments. 2- Thorax has a pair of indentations called humeral pits. 3- Wings usually have distinctive patterns of dark grey/brown areas and clear areas. 4- Two radial cells are present. 5- Between the radial vein and the m vein, the r-m cross vein is present. 6- Palps are short and simple. 7- Mouthparts of females have complex cutting and piercing elements.
