| Description |
English: Courthill Smithy Kirkpatrick Macmillan (1812-1878) is one of the world's great unsung heroes. In 1839 whilst working at this smithy he adapted a hobby-horse for operation by treadles and levers driving the back wheel, hence inventing the bicycle. In 1842, to demonstrate the practicality of his invention he rode it to Glasgow and back (taking two days each way). Macmillan did little to exploit his invention - indeed it was only in 1892 that it was finally acknowledged that his was the first of various similar machines.
There is little outward sign of the significance of this building which started a quiet revolution in transport, apart from a couple of plaques on the wall. His life and work is celebrated in the biennial Kirkpatrick Macmillan Cycle Rally held on the May bank holiday in alternate years. This image shows members of the 2009 rally halting beside the Smithy to pay their respects en route from the Cyclists breakfast in the village hall to the Cycle Museum at Drumlanrig Castle. |
