Annotations to James Joyce's Ulysses/Contents
These Annotations to James Joyce's Ulysses are based on the original edition of the novel, published by Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company in Paris on 2 February 1922. Episode divisions and titles, though not present in the editio princeps, have been added to avoid confusion and to aid the modern reader. Joyce himself divided the novel into three parts, to which he gave the titles the Telemachia, the Odyssey and the Nostos (or "Return Home"), though these titles were suppressed when the book was published.[1] I have adopted the standard spellings used by contemporary Joyceans. Joyce's idiosyncratic spellings derive from Victor Bérard's two-volume Les Phéniciens et l’Odyssée, which he consulted in 1918 in the Central library of Zürich.[2] All eighteen titles occur in the two schemata which became public after the appearance of the novel and which outline its structure and Homeric parallels.
