Hedges are groups of plants planted in rows to provide structure to a garden, or as screens. They are generally kept pruned in geometric forms as well.

The most important characteristic making a plant suitable for hedging is that it should tolerate hard pruning. Plants that branch frequently are also preferable.

Hedges are maintained through regular shearing, or in some cases through pollarding.

Common problems for hedges include invasion by weed plants, dying out at the bottom, and improper plant selection, and inconsistent maintenance.
