Blocking IP addresses for one year[edit source]

Isn't that far too harsh for a couple of vandalism edits? Even when considering global contributions, I cannot explain why you blocked IPs such as 186.1.190.19 for an entire year and revoke TPA as well. Personally it should not be longer than a week for the first block. Leaderboard (discusscontribs) 09:46, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Leaderboard: Not when it's an LTA who has has, quoting Vermont: "threatened to arrive at my home with an automatic weapon to slaughter myself and my family". See here for more information on this LTA (hence the "abusing multiple accounts/malicious sockpuppetry" reasoning I add). —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 17:56, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, I think it would help if you could make such a note when you block such users (as it left users like me terribly confused), and I don't see any IP addresses in the discussion you linked. How did you infer that those IPs are that LTA (did someone use CheckUser)? Leaderboard (discusscontribs) 18:03, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Will keep in mind... I'll use "George Reeves Person LTA" in the blocking reasoning. The way I'm able to identify that the edits are of this LTA is obvious, it follows the pattern mentioned in the thread I've linked at en.wikiversity above. His vandalism sprees relate to boxing or chess and is evident that the edits by these IPs are malicious as trusted SWMT members have been consistently reverting his edits in the past couple of days. The IP addresses are not linked in the discussion above because he is constantly changing IP addresses, hence why we have several different IPs that are reverting SWMT members reversions and consistently leaving nonsensical messages in the pages related to Chess. I've been dealing with this LTA for a couple of years now, so there pattern of vandalism sticks out like a sore thumb when I detect it. Thanks. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 18:08, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, I wrote a filter that should block all such chess spam for now. This is the equivalent of protecting all the subpages of both books. Leaderboard (discusscontribs) 16:02, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

False positive of the edit filter[edit source]

Hi Atcovi, Could you please take a look at Wikibooks:Edit_filter/False_positives#ManuelGR? --ManuelGR (discusscontribs) 16:53, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @ManuelGR: I must admit I don't have much experience in edit filters, but of course, I'll try my best to solve out the issue. Has the IP considered creating an account so that their edits can "bypass" the filter? I read the discussion linked in the False positive request and I don't believe they answered your suggestion of creating an account. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 19:14, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That editfilter is sometimes set to warn, but usually to block, because of extreme / harassing vandalism from a user who hops between IP addresses and is therefore difficult to block normally. For the time being it needs to remain in block mode so the only way to avoid it occasionally catching genuine users is for them to create an account. MarcGarver (discusscontribs) 13:24, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @MarcGarver: Agreed, fighting spammers needs radical solutions, but it's a bit inconsistent that Wikibooks allows one to contribute without an account for years, and then suddenly blocks you without giving you a chance to report the problem and with minimal information about the reasons. In principle, he wished to not maintain an account, I suppose for the overhead of remembering credentials and receiving unwanted messages, but I will direct this conversation to him, so he can make a new decision about the matter. How we will see unregistered users[edit source]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Add Syntax highlighter gadget in Wikibooks also[edit source]

Hello, I want to request you to add Syntax highlighter gadget in Wikibooks also as it color wiki syntax in the edit box and make editing wiki faster and easier.

I always use it and maybe it also help other editors. It is also available in English Wikipedia. Thanks Zsohl (discusscontribs) 07:39, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

To be blunt, I'm not sure why you felt the need to change the template, T. The template is fine as it is. Maybe continue contributing to the Minecraft resource gathering book would be a better use of your energy and time? Proposing a new book[edit source]

Hi, I have created Programming in LOLGraphics 3.4, and since fiction books for educational purpose are allowed here, I’m interested to know is it ok to create a “fiction” with programs in LOLGraphics. I was thinking of creating a book about a cat who is traveling to The Kingdom of Cats, and on the way he is asked to write programs in LOLGraphics. Every chapter will have a problem in LOLGraphics, and then a code solving that problem with detailed explanations, things that the reader has to put attention on, and ways the code can be written differently. Do you think this is in the scope of Wikibooks? -Gifnk dlm 2020 From Middle English Wikipedia 📜📖💻 (talk) 20:48, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Gifnk dlm 2020: Hey! Thanks for the question. I would believe that creating a book about cats that isn't based off of a well-established piece of literature would fall under original fiction/literature listed at Wikibooks:What is Wikibooks? > "Wikibooks is not a mirror or a text repository". If I may have missed something in your proposal or even a WB amendment that I've missed, please enlighten me. Thanks. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 03:02, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your reply! The book will be a collection of problems to write codes in the programming language LOLGraphics. Every problem will have a backstory and that’s where the cats come into play. The book will be as following:
  1. Preface
  2. Problem I
  3. Solution to Problem I
  4. Problem II
  5. Solution to Problem II
...
The book will be meant for readers who have already read the book about LOLGraphics and would like to practice. -Gifnk dlm 2020 From Middle English Wikipedia 📜📖💻 (talk) 07:28, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'd recommend incorporating these example stories in the project itself rather than a separate project. You could put this as a type of "end-of-the-course test". —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 19:41, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmmm interesting idea. But won’t it cause that book to be a bit long? Imo it has a clear scope which is teaching the functionalities of LOLGraphics. I think combining them in a single book would make it harder to navigate. The book I’m suggesting will be called “Practice Problems in LOLGraphis” and will have problems, codes with detailed explanations, as well as a plot. Theoretically it’s possible to merge it with the existing book but that would either make it harder to navigate, or the printable version harder to navigate. -Gifnk dlm 2020 From Middle English Wikipedia 📜📖💻 (talk) 20:10, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If the book that you're planning on writing is titled "Practice Problems in LOLGraphis", then I don't see a problem. I thought that the book would be more geared towards a fictional world vs. an "excersise" book for LOLGraphis. If the latter is the case, then I don't see any issue with the book. Let me know if you have any more questions! —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 21:34, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! The primary purpose of the book will be an exercise book, however, is it ok to have in it a sort of “plot” to make it more interesting? -Gifnk dlm 2020 From Middle English Wikipedia 📜📖💻 (talk) 21:44, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's what my concern was, but if it is more orientated towards example problems rather than an original fictionous world - it may still pass of as an instructional guide - therefore, within Wikibooks' scope. I suggest working on the project and I can step in if its falling out of Wikibooks' scope. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 22:12, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK I see. I will start work on the first problem, you will be able to see it at Practice Problems in LOLGraphics. -Gifnk dlm 2020 From Middle English Wikipedia 📜📖💻 (talk) 10:11, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Multiline code[edit source]

You recently deleted 2 unused pages in Guide to the Godot game engine. I thanked you once, I'll do it here too. Thanks! One problem I'm facing, however. I seen books that use some multiline version of the above tag. But it seems to be a template when I look into the page code. However it seems wrong to use a book specific template in another book.

I don't want this giberish:

line 1 line 2 line 3 ect

But

line 1

line 2

line 3

ect

is inconsistant and buggy

# Test comment (this should be a new line)

.

To fix it, I need to place another new line, but that's not the point. Please can you help me? Thanks! L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 12:19, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello L10nM4st3r. I'm happy to help! If you could just link me the other books that you're seeing this multiline version on, that would be helpful for me in understanding what the issue is. I could check out the template being used and get a better idea of what you're trying to accomplish. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 12:27, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You rock! Ada Programming/Building should work (if not, give me time to fix it) is it and works. You'll need to scroll down a bit though L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 12:48, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, can it be a simple interface? I dont have copy/paste. Somthing like

{ {code|line 1

line 2
line 3
} }
to put it in. It's mainly the box outline with multiline text in it I want. Thanks! L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 13:07, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Would this work?

line 1<br>
line 2<br>
line 3<br>

You would have to use the "<br>" after every line that you want in order for it to be a separate line. You wouldn't have it turn into that odd code format that I think you're referring to as "garbage" (forgive me if I'm wrong for this ;p) - or if you're referring to how it is set up at Ada Programming/Building#ObjectAda command-line, you would put a space in front of each line. Is this what you're looking for? Thanks! —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 20:27, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so sorry... I figured it out by myself just now... Sorry for your time.

Last question, probably. I know certain symbols have a code to they don't cause certain problems. I made a template for tedious pages in "my" book. It has 3 arguments: name, description, external link. I want to make that last one optional. But I need to check if {{{3}}} different to "{{{3}}}". But they are always the same, as both get replaced with whatever {{{3}}} is. So, what is this code for "{" and "}" ({[code]{3}[code]} is how i'l do it) P.S: I figured it out 3 minutes before you replied. Lol! L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 22:20, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Update: it's late, but who cares? Guide_to_the_Godot_game_engine/What_I_can_code_with/GDScript/Data_types/bool. The page's code is nicer now, but I wanna get rid of the "help=". How would I check if "{{{help}}}" is nonexistant? L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 23:29, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, I don't think there is a way to remove it unless you want to completely remove the "help" section of the template. You would just have to put nothing after help if you don't want the help message showing up. I could create a "nohelp" so that editors seeing the template through the "source editor" can see that additional readings or informations isn't needed. Do you want to do this? —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 00:13, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I guess either you are in a different time-zone to me, or WOW! You're an early bird (or a late-night owl)! Anyway, yes please! But please give me 30 minutes to quickly add something I forgot too add yesterday... And to remember what it actuallly was. Thanks! L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 08:28, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have added something that gives more control of what's after the
if {{{trueif}}}:
    pass # This runs
block. It would allow easier addition to see more. See the bool file for an example. It includes a "history" section. L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 09:01, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Right, one more time and I'll hit myself in the face: I checked "hide me edits" in the watchlist section of preferences, but my watchlist shows all 249 (now 250) of my recent edits. But this is unhelpful! What am I missing, or do I need to wait awhile. (Im going to sleep anyway now, so if it's that, then I have a lot of "waiting") L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 23:08, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure. To remove your own edits, you would check the "Changes by others" box in the list of preferences. Otherwise, I'm not sure what other options you're marking. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 05:29, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think I figured it out. The desktop version works, but not the mobile one. The mobile version has no "search" bar. Is this a bug?L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 08:40, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The search bar works perfectly fine for me when I'm on my phone. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 17:05, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I guess I could use the desktop version. I read that you can customize your watchlist. How would I use this to hide edits from users with certain usernames (Mine - and if it is even possible).? Related: can other people edit your common.css and common.js files? I don't think it should be possible. For security reasons. L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 19:12, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
To hide your own edits, you would toggle "Changes by others" in your watchlist. As for your other question, it seems like one can edit another person's common.css/common.js - but obviously no one is going to do that. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 19:49, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
My watchlist has 2 buttons: List and modified. In modified, it allows searching different namespaces. Anyway, I'll let it go. I'll use the desktop page. And maby give you a break ;)... Hopefully :p L10nM4st3r (discusscontribs) 20:47, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Images of increasing size[edit source]

In Guide to the Godot game engine, another editor put an image in "gallery" tags. When I put 2 more images in it, they are larger than the last. I can't shrink them. Please can you help. Thanks. L10nM4st3r Roar at me/what my paws scratched 16:16, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there is a way to shrink the latter two images [in that current gallery setting] because all the individual images' resolutions are different. I've tried some new things with the gallery options in the "visual" edit mode. There is an option to make them all the same size, but that is with the "traditional" setting with an outline. I'm not sure if you want an outline on your images, but if you do, that would be the best route. For example, the gallery images on Wikijunior:Asia are all the same size (width & height) because they are in the "traditional" setting (includes an outline). What route would be best with you? —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 18:41, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind outlines if the images are of the same size. Please let me try to give it a go first. Thanks. L10nM4st3r Roar at me/what my paws scratched 19:00, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If it is in the gallery mode, you're not able to change the sizes than what it automatically does. Personally, I don't believe it's a major issue, but if you want them bigger, I didn't see any issues with the previous images being of different sizes. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 19:22, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello L1onM4st3r. I apologize for the late response. I've been caught up with real life events in the last week or so. I don't understand your issue here unfortunately. Are you asking how to hide the other skin options? General rule: If you don't want a certain skin, then don't select that skin. Thank you and reach out to me if you have any more questions. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 18:27, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Atcovi. I believe this has been sorted. L10nM4st3r made a query at Wikibooks:Reading room/Technical Assistance#Hiding unneeded buttons, and got the technical info on how to change their CSS by going to w:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), which I believe worked fine. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 18:52, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, it seems that you can't edit somebody else's .js or .css file. Well, you can, but most users (non admins) can't. That is why nobody ever actually does. Because it can't be done! L10nM4st3r-Roar at me 08:11, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite IP blocks[edit source]

Hello. Generally, IPs shouldn't be blocked indefinitely as it will be randomly assigned to different users. Kindly review the blocks you made and adjust accordingly. Thanks. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 11:36, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I echo MG's words on that my most recent infinite block remains appropriate (as that person is a well-known LTA across Wikimedia). As for the 2018 and 2017 blocks, I believe these blocks were made in error. I've unblocked them as of late 2022. Thanks. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 13:37, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going insaane[edit source]

Not again, another typo :(. So... What do you do when you make fifty typos per edit, every edit, suddenly, and you normally don't? What I do is try (and fail miserably) to make a joke about it to somebody with a sense of humor. Obviously I suck at it. Ironic, eh? L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 22:13, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Beyond confused at the message but it did give me a chuckle. Good to see you and your unique character here Lionmaster :) —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 03:18, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I basically made a page full of typos, and somebody else had to fix pretty much at least one typo from 80% of sentences... And I will go insane if I forget how to laugh xD
I also remembered something else: My mum was talking about one of my primary school test from ages ago, and the questions were something like "can you write what you learned?" (I forgot now, but it was something like that anyway), and in an answer that obviously expected four pages, I magically managed to get it in one word: "yes". "Can you explain how to edit Wikibooks?" "Yes, and I probably will"! That is an example of a question of that type I just made up. No, I had never heard of a "wiki" until maybe three years ago. Started out with crappy edits under a username I forgot! Got bored though. I was under the impression only I would see the changes xD! L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 20:24, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Multilingual Dictionary[edit source]

Hi,

this is Julia. I am writing to you as an admin of Wikibooks. I am part of Off-University, a self-organisation of politically-persecuted scholard from around the world. We are mainly organizing free and open online courses.

One of these courses took place with a researcher on the island of Lesvos and had as its theme the coexistence of people in the camps. In this course, a dictionary was created that documents the new, common language that is emerging there. I could share an online version of it if you wished (but Wiki doesn't allow me to share links here - so maybe later).

One of the feedbacks to the collection so far was that this language is also used far beyond Lesvos and we would love to collect many more important stories and words with the wiki idea.

I would be interested to hear (or read) what you think about this idea. Would it be a good thing to create a wikibooks and open it up for the community?

All the best! Julia Strutz (discusscontribs) 08:40, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Julia Strutz: If this page that you're intending to create is similar to our language books (German, for example), then this should be fine. I would be interested in you creating your book and we can make adjustments when necessary. If it looks to be unsuitable for Wikibooks, we can try Wikiversity. Make sure to review Wikibooks:What is Wikibooks? before creating your book,
Thanks and good luck!

I'm new to wikibook, and I'm wondering if I'm doing this right[edit source]

Hello. I was looking for online study guides for AP European History, which led me to finding the European History wikibook. However, I found that there was one chapter that was left incomplete, and I thought that I should try to fill it in myself. Since this is my fist time ever using wikibook, I have no idea if my edits are valid, so I'm wondering if you can take a look and review them, since you were the last one to review it. Thanks!

Hello @Luke Reyes: sorry for the late reply. I've gone ahead and fixed a few formatting mistakes here: 1 & 2. I also made a couple small corrections on the page you're working on. Overall, these are great contributions and thank you for your efforts to improve our books! —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 01:00, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
