The Redcrosse Knight has been commissioned by the Faerie Queene Gloriana to rescue the Lady Una's parents from a dragon. Una, riding on a donkey and accompanied by a dwarf and a lamb, guides the knight. A storm erupts, and the group takes shelter in a tree-filled grove, where they soon become lost. They find a cave and learn that it is the home of the half-woman, half serpent beast known as Errour.
