Semi-free Kumite is practised in many karate styles. It is intended to introduce the student to real combat use of karate in a controlled and structured way. For example, in 5-step (or Gohon Kumite), students working in pairs take turns in delivering pre-arranged strikes and blocks while moving in straight lines across the dojo floor.
