Bunkai means "breaking down" or "decomposing". Within karate it is usually used to mean extracting individual moves from kata in order to create relevant drills for self-defence. For example, the first three moves of a kata may be interpreted to be a defence and counterattack in response to an opponent grabbing the arm.
